Views are used to define exact columns that you want to see in display lists and to format displayed data.
Using views you can create both a simple and a complex display list containing dozens of columns. There are many fields you can use in your views. For example, for tasks and requests there are over 50 fields.
Since there are so many potential fields, you can use custom views to display data that is relevant in certain context: for example financial data, data related to work, related to dates, related to people that work on a certain task or request etc.
NOTE: Try not to add too many fields in your views. How many fields makes sense to add depends on available area of your display. Try to break large views into smaller views that contain the right information.
Views also alow you to format displayed data using conditional formatting. You can use this feature to visually highlight important parts of your data or to differentiate some parts of it from others.
Like filters and groupings, new views are private by default and only you as their creator can access them but you can make views public so that anyone can use them.
NOTE: If you often use a particular view for analyzing your data, you might be better off creating a new report with that view. You might even want to embed such a report directly into your dashboard to make it even easier to access your data.
